Tech level: Steam power in Mactech (Industrial city where he lives); electric lighting comes from this & Runes. Most places do not have steam power, & there is currently only one train on the continent which only travels in the Dome region.
The world of Minoa is different from Earth on a very fundamental level, and the continent in which Kaz lives is called Ediacara is the most advanced technology-wise. In general the continent is largely forest, with the plains-type areas in Micah used for farming. There are 5 capital cities with a technical 6th, although it is a capital suspended in the sky and reserved for members of the world's religious order, the Holy Order. It is the main religion of all Humans and Half-Elves and focuses on healing, banishing Demons, upholding the Royal Law, and performing last Rites.
In general most cities are governed in some way by the Perpetian Monarchy, the only exceptions being the Elf-region of Evre, the region of Fuggum where Witches resides, Mactech, and Turia, a region filled with demons.
Background;
Once upon a time the continent of Ediacara was more of less just a bunch of bands and provinces ruled by individual leaders without much direction. The Elves had control of Evre and distanced themselves from everyone, the demons lived in Turia, the Witches in Metaphor...and humans remained scattered about doing pretty much their own thing. Then one day a man appeared seemingly out of nowhere, commanding an army of the dead. With this army he devastated the continent, destroying forest and plain alike as he lead his unholy servants on a rampage. No matter how they tried no one seemed able t stand up to him; all that were felled joined his undead army. As the necromancer advanced and took area after area under his command it seemed there would be no hope in stopping him.
And then a woman by the name of Joan appeared.
Wielding the power of Holy beings known as Angels and Arch Angels she personally united the remaining forces and led them in a desperate war against the necromancer. By imparting the wisdom granted to her by the holy host Joan passed along their protection and power until against all odds, the necromancer was felled, and those victorious eventually became the first denizens of the Perpetian Monarchy. For her service and valor and bravery when all hope seemed lost Joan was made a Saint and through her the Holy Order and church were founded.
And then 4000 years later things got totally fucked up when one of her descendants, a young 12-year-old boy by the name of Adel accidentally uncovered a cursed tome created by said necromancer to facilitate his return.
Adel lived in a small village near the Micah-Fuggum border with his mother. Since his father had passed away shortly before his birth due to fever she more or less raised him all by herself, and did the best job ever because she was a kick-ass mom. Adel just happened to be not-quite-the-studly-being that his dad was. His favourite activities included helping her with the cooking and baking and cleaning, reading, and...kind-of sort-of talking to the voices in his head. WHICH WERE ANGELS so he wasn't totally bonkers, he was just the only one who could hear them and not always--but him mom was proud and encouraged him. He didn't really have any talent with magic per say, he was just able to speak with them which was great since he sort of idolized the Holy Order and dreamed of becoming a brave and awesome paladin who would rescue people and protect the innocent. PROBABLY IMPOSSIBLE when he was basically a noodle and should have been born a girl but his mom was like reach for the stars!! so c:
Predictably he never quite made it to Paladindom on account of finding the necromancer's book while basically playing a bravery-testing game where one entered into the cursed witch forest of Fuggum. To be fair Adel made it pretty far but that's about the only good thing that came of it. He happened to stumble upon an abandoned shrine sort of structure, and behind a closed-off area was the necromancer's book. Upon opening it necromatic energy basically exploded outward into the poor thing, corrupting his ability to hear the Holy beings and...well, pretty much everything else about him. And being twelve he didn't exactly know how to control his newly-"gifted" powers. It resulted in him accidentally reviving several ghouls which ravaged the town, killing everyone within and destroying the immediate area so that nothing would grow there any longer.
It left him more than a little effed up and he basically wandered aimlessly for several weeks, traumatized and unable to stop the power that kept radiating off of him. Every time he had nightmares the dead around him would wake and that just never ended well for everyone. By the time a year had passed Adel had unintentionally destroyed two more villages (3 including his own) and the world began to hear rumors of a necromancer rising in Micah. He never wanted or intended to hurt anyone--in fact he hated any sort of conflict and did everything he could to distance himself from others so he wouldn't hurt them. But the angels could no longer speak to him with the necromancer's powers attached to his body so he had no one to guide him until on chance, one day a wandering priest of the Holy Order approached him.
Rather than condemn or attack him though the priest took care of Adel cleaning him up, providing him with reassurance and in general just...being a surrogate parent. He fed him and kept after him, and on more than one occasion he even managed to quell panic-induced bouts of necromancy. Through the priest Adel learned that what had happened wasn't his fault and that he really could have no control over what had happened--but he could change what was to come. There might be a way to remove the necromatic powers from his body if he found the correct method--and more than that it was possible to learn to control them so that he didn't unwittingly hurt any more people. Adel jumped on this idea and decided right then and there that that was what he wanted to do.
The next day when he woke up, the priest was gone and he was alone again--but he had purpose and a goal, and Adel decided that no matter what he was going to fix what had happened and one day return to Haplith to undo the damage and properly lay everyone to rest.
Five years later Adel had managed to destroy a total of 6 villages and had a bounty placed upon his head valued at $5 million (50,000 gold coins). Basically the entire continent was out for his head. The memory of what the original necromancer had done was still incredibly fresh even after so long (anyone found practicing necromancy was put to death) so as soon as word got around that a necromancer going by the name "Adel the Harbinger" had appeared it became everyone's #1 priority to see the evil fiend destroyed. So while they expected some powerful horrific villain in reality what they had was an awkward, noodle of a hero-wannabe who really wants nothing more than to do the right thing even if it means separating himself from everything and everyone or pushing people away. The only friends he's had in the last five years have been souls of the dead, and every time he encounters them he's always sure to take them to the nearest church for purification and a proper send-off.
He now currently searches the world for a way to contain/banish his necromancy from himself as a self-taught scholar since he's...actually really good with learning and knowledge. And a hardcore epistemophiliac. Who often has to use a decoy necromancer made of decomposed body parts to keep himself out of trouble and from being discovered. The high mortality rate of his "accidents" is pretty much the only reason no one knows what he looks like.
Little does Adel know that the priest he met in his youth is actually a human named Lucas possessed by a Grower, whose only goal is to grow and feast upon as much magic as possible. To this end he works with a covert organization aiming to use Belief for their own ends and he was sent to find Adel specifically when the Holy Order caught wind of what happened in Adel's village. He spent a year searching for an all-powerful necromancer...only to find a child instead. So he did what was necessary to achieve his goals and gave Adel the tools he would need to become a meal worth eating. Targets to pursue and access to his deadly power. He did this only to ensure that Adel would follow through on what Lucas wanted him to do.
He now waits and observes Adel on his travels, waiting to see when his powers will grow and come to fruition so he can devour it.
Personality;
Adel is first and foremost an honest person who more or less wears his heart on his sleeve. He'd never seriously wish harm on anyone else or try to take revenge or anything--he's more likely to run away from conflict than instigate or pursue it, and more likely to let himself get beaten up than fight back. Which makes the fact that he has to lie about himself a lot challenging since he...sucks at it, really. Adel's vastly charismatic when it comes to certain things (research, the Holy Order, etc) but much less so when it comes to other things...like socializing. Awkward best describes him when it comes to a lot of common-sense interactions between people. Most of Adel's interactions in the last 6 years of his life have been entirely short-lived, hostile, or...heartbreaking ): So he's lacking in the "extended relationships" department, the "having friends" department, and the "staying with someone longer than 2 days" department. Pretty much the only people he can talk to without worry are spirits of the dead and that's...just kind of depressing a lot of the time. He feels bad for them and will usually do whatever he can to help finish their "last wish" if he can.
Adel's quick to show guilt when he feels bad, cries when he's upset or touched and basically does everything in excess. He'll be too focused, try too hard, be too dense, get too attached. Basically he just has a lot of emotions and doesn't have the maturity to manage everything properly. He's not incompetent with them, he's just not good at judging and responding to various situations. Basically the dumbest smart person to ever live. While he may be a self-taught scholar with and impressive talent for retaining knowledge he's almost completely clueless when it comes to normal human interaction. His emotional maturity is still stuck somewhere around 14 years old thanks to the events that lead him to become a necromancer.
He's genuinely kind and values all life no matter how small or artificial. He abhors killing and fighting and always looks for a way to avoid. "Make love not war" basically sums up his whole core. He's not a fighter at heart and is...really just one big pacifist.
He's not used to having attachments to other people that last purely because he's always had to be on the run or avoiding populated areas. He was basically a recluse until he met Euri and found himself just...immensely enjoying the company of others. Having friends is something he treasures more than anything else and wants to do anything he can to make them happy without...having them get too attached to him, because he knows he's kind of just dangerous (although I'm taking Adel from before he meets Euri). He always gives people a different name to call him by when he introduces himself.
